I do values work all of the time with leaders. Identifying core values is an important step in creating a successful culture for your organization.
What I haven’t done with leaders one-on-one is work on their personal values with them.
Discovering your personal values involves a process of self-reflection and introspection. It took some time and deep reflection, but once I had my values laid out in front of me, it was clear to me that this was my edge—my leadership edge. There are many different exercises you can do to help you find the words that resonate with you, but I highly recommend using a coach to guide and challenge you through the process.
One of the phrases that stood out to me during my values exercise was “abundant life.”
Among other things, living an abundant life requires having the right support structure around you. For many leaders, their team plays a vital role in enabling them to live according to their values. Building a team composed of individuals who share your vision and complement your skills can free up valuable time and energy for personal growth and pursuing your passions. As the saying goes, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.” Ensuring that each member of your team is in the right position is crucial for leveraging their strengths and achieving collective success.
Understanding abundance and what it means to me can help me not only live into this value but also set boundaries and embody leadership in a way that is authentic to me. I understand my energy and if something doesn’t make me feel “abundant,” I know it isn’t right for me or the life I’m building.
A personal values exercise is one of the most profound things I’ve done for myself – both personally and professionally. It helped me understand my energy, my leadership style, and how I can show up as my best self, time and time again.
Our personal values serve as guideposts that shape our actions, choices, and priorities. Identifying and embracing our values can empower us to live authentically and intentionally. They provide clarity and direction, acting as a compass in navigating life’s challenges and making important decisions.
As a leader, I encourage you to get clear on your personal values, whether you choose to do it yourself or with help. You’ll understand yourself on a different level and be able to show up with the energy you need to be successful day after day.
I’m curious what personal values are most important to you!
Share if you’re willing. The more leaders we can inspire to be their authentic selves, the more impact we will make and the world will be a better place because of it.
